Succeeding in doing things that are challenging extends beyond the challenge itself. It produces a confidence that permeates a person’s life and helps them to attempt and conquer things they might not otherwise attempt. A community full of confident people produces a highly successful city.

Marathons are a great way to bring a community together, and the Houston marathon does a terrific job at that. In order to keep a marathon popular for both the local and national running communities, it needs a robust set of pacers. While the workers and volunteers are the backbone of any marathon, the pacers are (excuse the pun) it’s legs.

I’ve been a Houston runner for almost 25 years and advocate running CHM to all the runners I meet. I love my city and all the big memories race weekend brings to the community. As a pacer I will encourage runner families and friends to join the fun and help volunteer at either the expo or out on the course come race day, or even just show up to cheer on all the runners.

Being a Pace Team Member gives me a chance to give back to the Houston running community directly. I think the conversations we have and encouragement we can give runners during the event is great because it is heartfelt, honest and a great distraction. I stepped in to do this in 2020 when someone dropped out an opening for the 3:05 marathon group opened so I changed my plans and helped many runners get their goal and it gave me a lot of satisfaction.

As an experienced pacer and runner, I bring a level of energy to every single run both as a participant and as a “supporting actor.” I attribute my success in running to people who have mentored me and pushed me to believe in myself and the reason I pace is to pass along the same thing to other runners. Even if someone isn’t running in my pace group if see someone struggling, I like to look for their name on their bib and send them some words of encouragement.
